Essential items list for women living the van life

"May the forest be with you"

Comfortable Sleeping Arrangements:

Sleep is the nourishment a woman’s body craves, the silent healer that rejuvenates her spirit, and the steadfast guardian of her well-being

Creating a comfortable sleeping space in your van is crucial for a good night’s rest, especially for senior women. Here are some detailed suggestions to enhance the sleeping arrangements in your van:

Quality Mattress or Topper

Invest in a high-quality mattress or memory foam topper that provides adequate support and comfort. Look for one with good ventilation to prevent overheating during the night.

Bedding:

When traveling, plan for your trip by choosing a bed appropriate for the climate—lightweight sheets for warmer weather and additional blankets for colder nights.

I personally like Mexican blankets and fleece throws for their color and warmth. They also roll up fairly small and can insulate the cooler on a hot day.

Pillows:

Select pillows that provide proper neck support. Memory foam or adjustable pillows can be particularly beneficial for personalizing comfort. Consider using pillowcases made of soft and breathable materials. If you have a special pillow at home – get a second one for the van!

I use feather pillows and transfer them from one domain to the other.

Window Coverings:

It is essential to make sure that your van has window coverings that are practical enough to block out light and maintain privacy. You can install blackout curtains or blinds to help regulate light and maintain a consistent sleep schedule. This is especially important if you plan on parking in areas with street lights or where the sun rises early. A sleep mask is always lovely to have ready.

Ventilation:

Install vents or windows that can be opened to promote airflow and prevent the interior from becoming stuffy. Proper ventilation is essential for a comfortable sleep environment. I always have two small USB fans for cross ventilation (in and out).

Organized Sleeping Area:

Keep the sleeping area well-organized. Having designated spaces for personal items and a tidy sleeping environment can contribute to a sense of calm and relaxation. For example, if you lived in a house without wheels, you would have a designated sleeping area. Shoe Pockets hanging near your bed are great for small, lightweight items like glasses, phones, keys, iPads, etc.

Temperature Control:

Depending on the climate, consider adding two small fans for cross ventilation and a micro heater to regulate the temperature inside the van. Thermal curtains or window coverings can also help with insulation.

Noise Reduction:

Senior women may be sensitive to noise, so using earplugs or a white noise machine can help ensure a peaceful night’s sleep. Always be prepared—earplugs only take up a little space!

Personal Touches:

Add personal touches such as decorative cushions (put a cover over your beloved pillow from home) or a favorite blanket to make the sleeping space feel more like home. This can contribute to a sense of comfort and familiarity.

Lighting is crucial. Fairy lights surround your sleeping area, entry lights, reading and task lighting, and solar outdoor lights can be scattered around your campsite.

By paying attention to these details, you can create a sleeping space that is not only comfortable but also conducive to restful and rejuvenating sleep during your van life adventures.

Safety Considerations

When parking overnight in public places like Cracker Barrel, Walmart, and truck stops…always ask permission rather than getting a knock and having to relocate in the middle of the night. So, always have a plan B, just in case.

Ensure that the sleeping area is easily accessible and does not pose any tripping hazards. Ensure a clear path to emergency exits—and you know your exit!

  • If necessary, try to go from the rear to the driver’s seat for a quick exit.
  • Hang your vehicle keys within reach at night to set off the vehicle alarm if necessary.
  • Wear your extra vehicle key on a lanyard around your neck when awake. Saves locking yourself out of your vehicle.
